Terms of Service

1. What softboiled is

softboiled is a personal recipe management app. You can digitize, organize, search, and transform your recipe collection with the help of AI. Your recipes are private by default.

These terms are a contract between you and {{ENTITY_LEGAL_NAME}}, a {{ENTITY_STATE}} company at {{ENTITY_ADDRESS}}. In these terms, “softboiled,” “we,” and “us” mean that company. “The Service” means the softboiled website and app and everything they do.

A few words we use throughout:

Content — anything you put into the Service: recipes, photos, notes, tips, menus, plans, pantry items, comments, and feedback.
Household Data — information about the people you cook for, including yourself: names, ages, allergies, dietary requirements, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, likes, dislikes, and notes.
Simmer — the AI feature that transforms a recipe. A softboild is the AI-generated recipe variant it produces.
Credits — prepaid balance you can buy to use AI features beyond the free monthly allowance.

softboiled is not a cookbook distribution platform. The cookbook indexing feature is for organizing recipes from books you own, not for digitizing or sharing books.

2. Who can use softboiled

You must be at least 18 years old to create an account. By creating an account you represent that you are 18 or older.

The Service is operated from the United States and is intended for people in the United States. If you use it from somewhere else, you are responsible for following your local laws.

3. Your account

You need an account to use softboiled. Keep your password to yourself and tell us at support@softboiled.app if you think someone else has used your account. We may ask you to verify your email address, and we may suspend an account we reasonably believe has been compromised.

You can delete your account at any time from Settings. What deletion removes, and the few records we keep afterwards, is described in our Privacy Policy.

4. Your content, and the license you give us

You own the content you upload. We do not claim ownership of it.

So that we can run the Service for you, you grant softboiled a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, display, and transmit your content to our service providers (including our AI provider), and to create derivative works from it, solely to operate and improve the Service for you. This license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for content you have shared with others and for records we must keep by law.

You represent that you have the rights to upload your content and to grant this license, and that you have the permission of any person whose information you enter.

You can export your content from Settings at any time. See the Privacy Policy for what the export covers.

5. Household Data — the people you cook for

If you enter information about other people, including children, you confirm that you are authorized to do so and that you will keep it accurate.

You understand that this information may be sent to our AI provider to answer your requests, and shown to any account you choose to link (see section 6). You can edit or delete it at any time. Our Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy explains how we handle it.

6. Linked accounts

You can link your account with up to four other softboiled accounts. A link needs both people to agree. Once a link is accepted, the other person can see:

your full household roster — every family member you have entered, with their allergies, diets, age band, likes, dislikes, and notes;
your recipes, including private ones, in a workspace of the same name as theirs;
your workspaces; and
comments on your recipes, which they can also post.

They can make softboilds from your recipes, which are saved in their library, not yours. They cannot edit your recipes. Either person can end a link at any time from Settings, and access stops immediately.

7. AI features

Simmer and the other AI features send your request, and the parts of your library it needs, to a third-party AI model to produce an answer. The Privacy Policy names the provider and lists what is sent.

AI output can be wrong. It may be inaccurate or incomplete, it may miss an allergen, and it may get a quantity, a temperature, or a cooking time wrong. Review every AI result before you use it, and read every ingredient before you serve anyone.

A softboild is saved as a new recipe. Your original is never overwritten. As between you and softboiled, you own the softboilds generated from your content, subject to any rights other people hold in the source material.

Some AI processing happens automatically when you save a recipe, to fill in tags and details. The app marks anything an AI filled in with a ✨ symbol. There is currently no way to turn this automatic processing off.

8. Allergen, dietary, and life-stage features

softboiled can mark recipes that conflict with an allergy, a diet, or a life stage you have entered. Here is exactly what that means:

The feature ranks and marks. A conflicting recipe is moved down and marked, not removed. Nothing is hidden from you.
Matching works by comparing ingredient names against a curated list. It does not read cooking steps, it does not know what a particular brand of product contains, and it does not know every ingredient.
Recipes from cookbooks and websites may contain allergens the source never listed.
Guidance for infants, children, pregnancy, and breastfeeding is general information drawn from public health sources. It is not advice about you or your family.

You are responsible for checking every ingredient before serving anyone. Nothing in the Service is medical, nutritional, or dietetic advice. Consult a physician, pediatrician, midwife, or registered dietitian for individual guidance.

9. Home and Body formulas

Home-care and self-care formulas are stored and displayed as you or your source entered them. softboiled does not verify their safety, does not add hazard warnings the source did not include, and is not responsible for chemical, respiratory, skin, or other injury from making or using them. Never mix cleaning products. Patch-test cosmetics. Keep all formulas away from children.

10. Cookbook indexing

The cookbook indexing feature lets you organize recipes from cookbooks you personally own. Each time you index from a cookbook, you confirm:

You own a physical or licensed digital copy of the book.
The recipes you extract are for your personal use only.
You will not share, screenshot, or redistribute cookbook-derived content through softboiled or elsewhere.

Cookbook-derived recipes are private to your account. We never make them public, never share them with third parties beyond what is required to operate the Service, and never include them in any analytics shared outside softboiled.

You agree to indemnify softboiled against claims arising from a false ownership confirmation. softboiled may remove content and suspend accounts where ownership is in doubt.

softboiled extracts only the functional elements of a recipe: the ingredient list, the basic cooking steps, times, and servings. We never extract or store cookbook photos, headnotes, stories, sidebars, or other creative content from the book.

11. Importing from the web

The web importer fetches only the page you ask for, when you ask for it, and stores a link back to the source. It is for organizing your own cooking. You are responsible for complying with the source site's terms. If you run a recipe website and would like us not to import from it, write to support@softboiled.app.

12. The public-domain library

softboiled includes a small shared library of recipes whose copyright has expired or whose license allows reuse. These recipes are visible to every user when you turn on “Show public recipes.” Each one carries its source and license. You may use them under the terms of that license.

13. Content we add to your library

When you first sign up, we offer to add a few example recipes and softboilds so you can see how the app works. They are tagged “Example” and you can hide or delete them. We also create default workspaces for you.

The operator of softboiled can also offer to add recipes to your library. We will tell you when we do, and they are added only if you accept.

14. Comments and community content

Comments on recipes, menus, and feedback reports are written by users. We do not pre-screen them. We may remove any comment or other content that breaks these terms. To report a comment, email support@softboiled.app with a link to it.

15. Acceptable use

You may not:

Upload content you do not own or have permission to use.
Attempt to bypass private-visibility controls on cookbook-derived recipes.
Share cookbook-derived content via screenshots, exports, or workarounds.
Use softboiled to redistribute copyrighted material.
Bulk-upload scanned PDFs or other digitized cookbook content.
Attempt to gain unauthorized access to other accounts.
Use softboiled to distribute malware or illegal content.
Abuse the AI features (excessive automated requests, prompt injection attacks).
Harass, threaten, or impersonate anyone.
Post hate speech, spam, or sexual content involving minors.
Post content that violates another person's privacy.

We may remove content and suspend or close accounts that violate these rules.

16. Payments, credits, and refunds

Free allowance. Every account gets a free allowance of $10 of AI use each calendar month. It resets on the 1st of the month (UTC) and unused allowance does not roll over.

Credits. If you use up the allowance, you can buy Credits in one-off purchases. There is no subscription and nothing renews on its own. Prices are in US dollars. A 3% fee is added on top of the amount you buy, and the checkout page shows it before you pay. Credits stack on top of the free allowance.

Purchased Credits do not expire. They are tied to your account and cannot be transferred. They have no cash value except as described in the refund policy below.

Refunds. Unused purchased Credits are refundable on request, at any time. Email support@softboiled.app and we will refund the unused balance to your original payment method.

If you delete your account, or if softboiled shuts down, any unused purchased Credit is refunded automatically. The free monthly allowance has no cash value and is not refundable.

Taxes. Sales tax may be added at checkout based on your billing address.

Changes. We may change prices, the fee, or the free allowance with at least 30 days' notice. A change never affects Credits you already bought.

Chargebacks. If you dispute a charge with your bank instead of asking us for a refund, we may suspend your account while we sort it out.

17. Copyright and DMCA

If you believe content on softboiled infringes your copyright, see our Copyright and DMCA Policy for how to submit a notice. We act on valid notices and close the accounts of repeat infringers (three valid notices within a 12-month window).

18. Termination

You may delete your account at any time. softboiled may suspend or close an account for a material violation of these terms, especially repeat copyright infringement, or if we shut the Service down.

Whoever ends the account, unused purchased Credits are refunded as described in section 16.

19. No warranty

softboiled is provided “as is.” We do our best to keep it running, but we cannot guarantee uninterrupted service. In particular, we make no promise about:

the accuracy of any AI output, including softboilds;
the completeness of allergen, dietary, or life-stage markers — see section 8;
nutrition estimates, which are approximate;
Home and Body formulas, which we do not check;
cooking timers, which may not fire if your device puts the app to sleep — do not rely on them as your only alarm; or
recipes that don't turn out as expected.

You are responsible for verifying ingredients, quantities, temperatures, and food-safety practices before cooking from any recipe on the Service.

20. Limit on our liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, softboiled is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost data or profits, arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim or $100.

Some places do not allow these limits, including for death, personal injury, fraud, or gross negligence. Where the law of {{GOVERNING_LAW_STATE}} does not allow a limit, it does not apply to you.

21. Your responsibility to us

You agree to defend and indemnify softboiled against claims, losses, and reasonable legal costs that arise from content you upload in breach of section 4, from information you entered about another person, or from your violation of these terms.

22. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of {{GOVERNING_LAW_STATE}}, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.

Talk to us first. If you have a dispute with us, email legal@softboiled.app. We will try to resolve it informally within 60 days.

Then small claims or arbitration. If we cannot, either of us may bring an individual claim in small claims court in {{VENUE_COUNTY_AND_STATE}}. Any other dispute will be resolved by binding individual arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association under its Consumer Arbitration Rules, in {{VENUE_COUNTY_AND_STATE}} or by video. You and softboiled each give up the right to a jury trial and to bring or join a class action. You may opt out of arbitration by emailing legal@softboiled.app within 30 days of creating your account.

Nothing in this section limits rights you have under consumer protection law that cannot be waived.

23. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If we make a material change, we will show you a notice in the app that summarizes what changed and ask you to accept the new terms before you continue. Each version is dated at the top of this page, and past versions are kept so you can always see what you agreed to.
